Dietitian vs. Nutritionist: What Is the Difference in Texas?
In Texas, "nutritionist" is an unregulated title — anyone can use it. A Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) has completed a master's degree, supervised internship, and national board exam. Here is why it matters.
When you are looking for nutrition help, you will encounter two titles: "dietitian" and "nutritionist." In Texas, these terms are not interchangeable — and the difference matters significantly for your health and your insurance coverage.
The Short Answer
- Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN): A licensed healthcare professional with a master's degree in nutrition, a supervised clinical internship, and a national board exam. In Texas, RDNs are also licensed as Licensed Dietitians (LD) by the state.
- Nutritionist: An unregulated title in Texas. Anyone can call themselves a nutritionist — regardless of education, training, or credentials.
What Does It Take to Become a Registered Dietitian?
Becoming an RDN requires years of rigorous education and training:

Bachelor's or Master's degree in nutrition and dietetics from an accredited program. As of 2024, the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) requires a minimum of a master's degree for new RDNs.

Supervised practice — a minimum of 1,200 hours of supervised clinical experience in hospitals, community settings, and food service operations.

What About "Certified Nutritionist" or "Nutrition Coach"?
These titles are also unregulated in Texas. While some certification programs are more rigorous than others, none require the same level of education, clinical training, or regulatory oversight as the RDN credential.
A "certified nutritionist" or "nutrition coach" may provide general wellness guidance, but they are not qualified to:
- Provide Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) for medical conditions
- Interpret lab values and adjust nutrition plans based on clinical data
- Bill insurance for nutrition counseling services
- Provide medical nutrition support for conditions like kidney disease, diabetes, or eating disorders
Why Does This Matter for Your Health?
If you have a medical condition — diabetes, kidney disease, heart disease, eating disorders, PCOS, or any other condition that requires clinical nutrition management — you need an RDN. General wellness advice from an unregulated nutritionist is not appropriate for medical nutrition therapy.
Getting nutrition advice from an unqualified provider for a medical condition can be actively harmful. For example:
- A high-protein diet recommended by an unqualified nutritionist can accelerate kidney damage in someone with CKD
- Aggressive calorie restriction recommended without clinical oversight can worsen an eating disorder
- Generic low-carb advice without understanding a patient's medications can cause dangerous blood sugar swings
Why Does This Matter for Insurance?
Insurance plans cover nutrition counseling provided by a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) — not by unregulated nutritionists or nutrition coaches. If you want your insurance to cover your nutrition counseling, you need to see an RDN.

You can verify an RDN's credentials through:

- Texas State Board of Examiners of Dietitians: dshs.texas.gov — verify active LD licensure in Texas
