What Medicare Covers for Dietitian Visits
Medicare Part B covers Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) as a benefit for beneficiaries with diabetes or kidney disease (non-dialysis). This benefit is provided by a registered dietitian or nutrition professional and is separate from your physician visits.
Diabetes MNT
Medicare covers 3 hours of MNT in the first year and 2 hours per year thereafter for beneficiaries with Type 1, Type 2, or gestational diabetes.
Kidney Disease MNT
Medicare covers 3 hours of MNT in the first year and 2 hours per year thereafter for beneficiaries with non-dialysis kidney disease (CKD stages 3–5).
Additional hours with physician referral
Additional MNT hours may be covered with a physician referral if your condition changes significantly.
