Does Aetna Cover Dietitian Visits?
Aetna covers nutrition counseling for diabetes, kidney disease, obesity, and other conditions. Learn what is covered, whether you need a referral, and how to verify your Aetna benefits in Texas.
Aetna covers nutrition counseling for a range of medical conditions, and many Aetna members in Texas have access to dietitian visits at little or no cost. Here is what you need to know about using your Aetna benefit for nutrition counseling.
What Aetna Covers for Nutrition Counseling
Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT)
Aetna covers Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) provided by a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) for the following conditions:
- Diabetes and prediabetes — Covered under most Aetna plans, often at $0 copay as a preventive benefit
- Chronic kidney disease (CKD) — Covered for stages 1–5 (non-dialysis) under most plans
- Obesity — Covered as a preventive benefit under ACA-compliant Aetna plans (BMI ≥ 30)
- Cardiovascular disease and hypertension — Covered under many Aetna plans
- Eating disorders — Covered when medically necessary
Preventive Nutrition Counseling
Under ACA-compliant Aetna plans, preventive nutrition counseling for obesity is covered at no cost-sharing. This applies even if you have not met your annual deductible.
How Many Dietitian Visits Does Aetna Cover?
The number of covered visits depends on your specific Aetna plan. Most plans follow Medicare guidelines for MNT:
- First year: Up to 3 hours of MNT
- Subsequent years: Up to 2 hours of MNT per year
- Additional visits may be covered if your physician documents medical necessity
Some Aetna plans are more generous and cover additional visits. The best way to find out is to call the member services number on the back of your Aetna card.
Do You Need a Referral for a Dietitian with Aetna?
Aetna PPO plans generally do not require a physician referral to see a dietitian. Aetna HMO plans typically do require a referral. Check your plan documents or call member services to confirm.
If your physician has recommended nutrition counseling, ask them to send a referral to our office. This ensures the visit is covered and gives your dietitian important clinical context about your health history.
How to Verify Your Aetna Benefits
- Call the member services number on the back of your Aetna card
- Ask: "Is Medical Nutrition Therapy covered under my plan?"
- Ask: "Do I need a referral to see a registered dietitian?"
- Ask: "What is my copay or cost-sharing for nutrition counseling?"
You can also log in to your Aetna member portal at aetna.com and search for "nutrition counseling" under covered benefits.
