Does Insurance Cover a Dietitian in Texas?
Most major insurance plans in Texas cover nutrition counseling — often at $0 copay. Here is exactly what is covered, which diagnoses qualify, and how to verify your benefits before your first visit.
If you have been putting off seeing a dietitian because you are worried about the cost, you may be surprised to learn that most major insurance plans in Texas cover nutrition counseling — and many patients pay nothing out of pocket.
Here is what you need to know.
What the Law Requires
Under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), preventive nutrition counseling for obesity is a covered benefit at no cost-sharing on all ACA-compliant plans. That means if your body mass index (BMI) is 30 or higher, your insurance is required to cover nutrition counseling without a copay or deductible.
Beyond that, Medicare and most commercial insurers cover Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) — a specific, evidence-based nutrition service provided by a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) — for several diagnosed conditions.
Which Diagnoses Qualify for Covered Nutrition Counseling?
The most commonly covered diagnoses include:
- Diabetes and prediabetes — Medicare covers up to 3 hours of MNT in the first year and 2 hours per year after that. Most commercial plans follow similar guidelines.
- Chronic kidney disease (CKD) — Covered under Medicare Part B and most commercial plans for stages 1–5 (non-dialysis).
- Obesity — Covered as a preventive benefit under ACA-compliant plans.
- Hypertension and cardiovascular disease — Covered under many commercial plans, especially BCBS and Aetna.
- Eating disorders — Covered under most commercial plans when medically necessary.
- PCOS and hormonal conditions — Coverage varies; many plans cover it under endocrine or metabolic diagnoses.
- Pediatric nutrition — Covered under most plans when a physician referral is provided.
Which Insurance Plans Cover Dietitian Visits in Texas?
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas (BCBS)
BCBS covers Medical Nutrition Therapy for diabetes and prediabetes under most Texas plans. Preventive nutrition counseling for obesity is also covered at no cost under ACA-compliant plans. Many BCBS members pay $0 copay for dietitian visits.

Aetna
Aetna covers nutrition counseling as a preventive benefit and as Medical Nutrition Therapy for qualifying diagnoses. Most Aetna members in Texas have coverage for diabetes, kidney disease, and obesity nutrition counseling.

UnitedHealthcare (UHC)
UHC covers MNT for diabetes and kidney disease, and preventive nutrition counseling for obesity. Coverage details vary by plan, but most UHC members in Texas have some level of nutrition benefit.

Ambetter and Curative
Both Ambetter and Curative cover nutrition counseling for qualifying diagnoses. We accept both plans at our Sugar Land office.
Do You Need a Referral?
It depends on your plan. Many insurance plans allow you to see a dietitian directly without a physician referral. However, some plans — particularly HMO plans — require a referral for the visit to be covered. We recommend calling the member services number on the back of your insurance card to confirm.
If your physician has already recommended nutrition counseling, ask them to send a referral to our office. This ensures the visit is covered and gives your dietitian important clinical context.
How We Verify Your Benefits
At Sugarland Dietitian, we verify your insurance benefits before your first appointment. You will know exactly what is covered — and what you will owe, if anything — before you walk through the door.
To get started, book a free 15-minute discovery call. We will confirm your coverage during that call.
What If My Insurance Does Not Cover It?
If your plan does not cover nutrition counseling, or if you are uninsured, we offer self-pay rates. Many patients find that even a few sessions with a registered dietitian saves them significant money in the long run by reducing medications, preventing hospitalizations, and improving lab values.
